Subsequently from here you can take the main path for hikes which follows an old fire road yet you will have many opportunities to veer off onto smaller paths up into different parts of the mountain. Without realizing it, you will be delighted finding the diverse paths you can choose from. However be careful to watch you trodden path so that you can find your way back to the beginning Trailhead. But no need to worry as you can always just head south and you will eventually wind your way down to the main Trail road or even to town.

Some interesting and random notes about Mt. Shasta:
A small friendly city in Siskiyou County, California, Mount Shasta is sitting at about 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) above sea level on the flanks of Mount Shasta, a prominent northern California landmark which rises over 14,000 feet. The awe-inspiring mountain is the second highest peak in the Cascades and the fifth highest in California and is considered to be sacred by people all over the world and even considered one of the seven sacred mountains in the entire world. Mt. Shasta is world-famous for it clean pure healthy water and its fresh clean breathable air quality.
Mt. Shasta city is about 9 miles (14 kilometers) southwest of the summit of its namesake volcano. Nearby the great mountain is the smaller but very beautiful and climbable peak of Black Butte. In the Census in 2010 the city had a population of 3,394, down from 3,624 at the 2000 census but the City really gets more populated during the fantastic summer months when people from all over the world come to enjoy the varied activities in the awesome clean air summer weather. Subsequently during these summer months, especially during the world-famous July 4th Run & Walk Race sponsored by the altruistic Mountain Runners, the population can double and all the lodging and stores get filled with visitors. It is a really fun time in Mt. Shasta.
Many visitors use the city as a home base for summer trout fishing in the nearby Sacramento, McCloud and Klamath rivers, for climbing and hiking on Mount Shasta, Castle Crags mountain range or the Trinity Alps mountains, or to view the beautiful local and surrounding scenery. Both alpine and cross-country skiing runs are available nearby as well as biking or hiking to waterfalls, streams and lakes in the area, including nearby Mossbrae Falls, Lake Siskiyou, Castle Lake and Shasta Lake.
In addition, a fun day driving trip for the kids is a drive around the nearby small town of Montague and see the Llama and Alpaca farms and also a peacock farm in Edgewood.. Additionally keep your eyes open for the random deer that are always walking past when least expected.
There is a bucolic odoriferous wonderland called The Lavender Farms about 30 minutes drive from Mt. Shasta off of Route 97 that goes through Weed. Mt. Shasta Lavender Farms is a working farm and seasonal destination where the views of Mt. Shasta are as intoxicating as the fragrance from the purple fields. Roam acres of lavender and cut a basketful to take home, enjoy their quality products, and sip lavender lemonade as you also refresh your spirit. It is closed for regrowing in 2016 and will be open again summer 2017. Don’t miss it!
